Warwick Driving Test Routes: Every Road You Need to Know

Warwick driving test routes run from Wedgnock House on Wedgnock Lane, CV34 5AP, and cover four distinct road types within about three miles: an industrial-estate start, the A425 through Warwick’s historic centre, the A429 and A445 out of town, and rural lanes. DVSA has not published official routes since 2010, so learn the area rather than a script.

The centre Drive With Issy uses. GOV.UK lists it as running car, motorcycle module 2 and ADI part 3 tests.

Where is the Warwick driving test centre and what does it run?

Warwick (Wedgenock House) is at Ground Floor, Wedgnock House, Wedgnock Lane, Warwick, CV34 5AP. GOV.UK lists it as running car, motorcycle module 2 (on-road) and ADI part 3 tests. It sits on the industrial area north-west of the town centre, which shapes the first two minutes of every test.

That start matters more than people expect. You leave a low-traffic industrial road and are on the A425 Birmingham Road within a few hundred metres, so the transition from stationary to a 40mph main road happens while you are still settling. Learners who have only practised pulling away on quiet estates feel it.

What makes Warwick a fair but demanding centre is the range packed into a small radius. Inside about three miles you have a constrained historic town centre, multi-lane A-road sections, a trunk-road bypass, and genuine single-track rural lanes. There is nowhere to hide a weakness.

Drive With Issy uses this centre. The 30 hour intensive course at £1,800 includes the practical test here, and lessons from Warwick, Leamington Spa and Kenilworth all build towards these roads. See also all Warwickshire test centres.

Directions and parking

An important caveat. DVSA stopped publishing official driving test routes in 2010, so nobody can honestly give you “the route”. What follows is the road network around the test centre and the features examiners have to assess somewhere within it. Learn the area, not a script.

Which roads make up the Warwick test area?

Eleven named roads do almost all the work. Below is each one, what it demands, and the fault it most often produces. Road classifications are as mapped on OpenStreetMap.

Wedgnock Lane

The centre’s own road. Wide, quiet, industrial. Its only real demand is the emergence onto Birmingham Road, where you need to be reading the main road while still completing your own observations. Common fault: hesitant emergence into a gap that was there.

Birmingham Road, A425

The immediate main road north-west of the centre. Steady speed, side turnings, and commercial entrances. Common fault: late positioning for a right turn.

Saltisford, A425

The A425 as it comes into Warwick. Multi-lane in sections with the lane you need decided before you can see the sign you wanted. Common fault: last-second lane change.

Northgate, A425 and A445

Historic, narrow for an A-road, with parked vehicles, pedestrians and a mix of priorities. Common fault: not slowing enough on approach to a constriction.

The Butts, A425

Short, tight, and central. Meeting traffic where two cars will not comfortably pass. Common fault: pressing on instead of holding back.

North Rock, A425

Another A425 section through the centre with junction decisions close together. Common fault: mirror checks compressed into one glance.

Coventry Road, A429

The route north-east out of Warwick towards Kenilworth. Higher limits, longer sightlines, and the temptation to sit below the limit. Common fault: undue hesitation and inappropriate speed.

Priory Road, A445

Connects the centre towards the Leamington side. Junctions, bus traffic and cycle activity. Common fault: not giving cyclists the current 1.5 metre clearance.

Cape Road and Millers Road

Residential grid west of the centre. Parked both sides, side roads every few hundred metres. This is manoeuvre territory and where meeting-and-passing gets assessed. Common fault: road position drifting wide of parked cars.

Guy’s Cross Park Road and Primrose Hill

The Woodloes Park side, north of the centre. Gradient on Primrose Hill, junctions on a slope, and residential parking. Common fault: rolling back on a hill start.

Lakin Road, Theatre Street, St Michael’s Road, Spinney Hill

Shorter connectors that fill out the residential sections. Narrow, with priority that is not always obvious. Common fault: assuming priority at an unmarked junction.

Will a Warwick test use the A46 bypass?

It can. The A46 Warwick Bypass is a trunk road that runs close to the test area, and Stanks Island is the junction that connects to it. A practical test has to assess your ability to deal with higher-speed roads somewhere, so plan on it rather than hoping.

What the bypass actually tests

Joining and leaving at speed, lane discipline over a sustained distance, mirror work before a lane change rather than during it, and holding a steady position without drifting. None of that is difficult. All of it is obvious to an examiner if you have only practised it twice.

Stanks Island

A large multi-lane junction where lane selection is decided on approach. Get the lane wrong here and the recovery is what gets marked, not the mistake.

The rural option

Warwick also has genuine single-track lanes within reach, which bring passing places, blind bends, mud and standing water. The Highway Code guidance on country roads — slowing for bends you cannot see round, expecting oncoming vehicles in the middle of the road — is directly assessable there.

What this means for practice

A Warwick test can plausibly include a historic town centre, a trunk road and a country lane in forty minutes. Practise all three. There is more detail on intensive driving course in Warwick if you need those hours condensed.

What happens in each part of a Warwick practical test?

A car practical test runs about 40 minutes and has five parts. Knowing the shape of it removes a surprising amount of test-day anxiety.

Part What happens Where at Warwick
Eyesight check Read a number plate at 20 metres Outside the centre on Wedgnock Lane
Show me, tell me One “tell me” question before driving, one “show me” while driving Stationary, then on the move
General driving Examiner-directed driving covering junctions, roundabouts and road types A425, A429, A445 and residential streets
Independent driving About 20 minutes following a sat nav or road signs Usually the A-road sections
Manoeuvre One of four, plus a possible emergency stop Test centre bays or the Cape Road residential grid

Test structure per DVSA practical test standards. The current vehicle safety questions are listed on the show me tell me page, and there is a fuller walkthrough on the practical driving test guide.

How should you prepare for a Warwick test specifically?

Get hours on the four road types the area contains — industrial-estate emergence, historic town centre, A-road and trunk road, and rural lane — rather than driving the same loop repeatedly. A route learned by memory falls apart the moment the examiner turns you the other way.

Four weeks out

Cover the A425 through Saltisford, Northgate and The Butts in both directions and at different times of day. The town centre at 9am and at 2pm are different problems.

Two weeks out

Bay parking at the test centre itself, if you can get in when tests are not running, plus parallel parking on the Cape Road and Millers Road streets. Add the A46 at Stanks Island.

The week before

Rural lanes and hill starts on Primrose Hill. Then stop adding new things. The last week is for consolidating, not for discovering a weakness you have no time to fix.

Test day

Arrive early enough to not be rushed, and remember the £150 test day fee covers use of the tuition car and the instructor’s time. Directions and parking are on the how to get to Warwick driving test centre page.

Drive With Issy does not guarantee a pass and does not recommend booking a test until you are driving at the standard. That is stated on the intensive driving course page and it applies to every course.

Warwick driving test FAQs

Where exactly is the Warwick driving test centre?

Ground Floor, Wedgnock House, Wedgnock Lane, Warwick, CV34 5AP, on the Wedgnock Lane industrial area north-west of the town centre. GOV.UK lists it as running car, motorcycle module 2 (on-road) and ADI part 3 tests.

Are these the official DVSA Warwick test routes?

No, and nobody has those. DVSA withdrew published test routes in 2010. This page sets out the road network in the Warwick test area and what each road demands, which is what you can actually prepare for.

Which roads is a Warwick test most likely to use?

The A425 through Saltisford, Northgate, The Butts and North Rock; the A429 Coventry Road; the A445 Priory Road; and residential sections on Cape Road, Millers Road, Guy’s Cross Park Road, Primrose Hill and Lakin Road. The A46 Warwick Bypass at Stanks Island is within reach for a dual carriageway section.

Will I have to drive on a dual carriageway?

Possibly. The A46 Warwick Bypass is close enough to the centre to be included, and a test has to assess higher-speed road use somewhere. Do not assume it will be avoided.

Where do the manoeuvres usually happen?

Bay parking is normally done at the test centre itself. Parallel parking and pulling up on the right need quiet residential streets with real gaps, which the Cape Road, Millers Road and Primrose Hill area supplies.

How long is the Warwick practical test?

A standard car practical test runs about 40 minutes, including roughly 20 minutes of independent driving following a sat nav or road signs, one manoeuvre, and possibly an emergency stop.

Can I take my test at Warwick if I learn in Leamington or Kenilworth?

Yes, and most do. Warwick is the nearest car test centre to both. Lessons from either town build up to these roads rather than treating them as a separate exercise.
