Where is Coventry driving test centre and what does it run?

Bayton Road Industrial Estate, 42 Bayton Road, Coventry, CV7 9EJ. GOV.UK lists it as running car, ADI part 2 and ADI part 3 tests. Despite the name it sits on the Exhall and Bedworth border, not in the city centre, so the test area is north Coventry and Bedworth.

That location defines the test. Bayton Road is a working industrial estate, which means articulated lorries, delivery vans reversing out of yards, and parked commercial vehicles narrowing the carriageway. You are dealing with that from the moment you pull off the centre’s forecourt, before you have settled.

The compensation is that the wider area is comparatively legible. The B4113 corridor is a well-signed spine, the roundabouts are conventional, and there is little of the historic-town awkwardness that Warwick brings. What Coventry asks for is composure around heavy traffic rather than precision in tight spaces.

Centre facts

  • Address: 42 Bayton Road, CV7 9EJ
  • Tests: car, ADI part 2, ADI part 3
  • Setting: working industrial estate
  • Test length: about 40 minutes
  • Independent driving: around 20 minutes

An important caveat. DVSA stopped publishing official driving test routes in 2010, so nobody can honestly give you “the route”. What follows is the road network around the test centre and the features examiners have to assess somewhere within it. Learn the area, not a script.

Which roads make up the Coventry test area?

Ten named roads carry most of it. Classifications are as mapped on OpenStreetMap.

Bayton Road

The centre’s own road, and the hardest thirty seconds of the test for a lot of candidates. Commercial vehicles parked on both sides, yard entrances, and reversing lorries. Common fault: passing a parked lorry without enough clearance or without checking what is coming.

Colliery Lane and Colliery Lane (North)

Connects the estate to the wider network. Bends, changing widths, and industrial access. Common fault: carrying too much speed into a bend that tightens.

Coventry Road and Coventry Road Exhall, B4113

The main spine through the test area. Multi-lane in places, steady traffic, frequent side turnings. Common fault: late lane selection at roundabout approaches.

Leicester Road, B4113

The continuation north-east. Higher speeds and longer sightlines. Common fault: inappropriate speed for the conditions, in both directions.

Sergeant Simon Valentine Way, B4113

A newer stretch of the B4113 with well-defined lanes and roundabouts. Common fault: drifting out of lane through a roundabout rather than holding a line.

Rye Piece Ringway, B4113

Bedworth’s ring route. Roundabouts in sequence, so the lane you take out of one determines the lane you need for the next. Common fault: treating each roundabout as an isolated decision.

Black Bank, B4113

Links the Exhall side towards Bedworth. Junctions and commercial entrances. Common fault: missing a cyclist alongside on the approach to a left turn.

Bulkington Road, B4029

The eastward route out of Bedworth. Changes character from built-up to open quickly. Common fault: not adjusting speed to a limit change.

Goodyers End Lane, Heath Road and Bowling Green Lane

Residential and semi-rural connectors. Narrower, with priority that is not always marked. Common fault: assuming priority at an unmarked junction.

Coalpit Fields Road and Newtown Road

Residential grid with parking both sides. Manoeuvre territory, and where meeting-and-passing gets assessed. Common fault: stopping in a position that blocks the road rather than pulling into a gap.

How does the A444 Bedworth Bypass fit in?

It is the trunk road immediately west of the test area, and it is the most likely place for the higher-speed section of your test. Plan for it rather than hoping it is skipped.

What it tests

Joining and leaving at speed, sustained lane discipline, mirror work completed before a lane change, and holding a steady position without wandering. Also the discipline of returning to the left lane rather than sitting out.

The HGV factor

The A444 carries significant goods traffic feeding the industrial estates. That means slower vehicles in lane one and faster overtaking traffic in lane two, and it means you have to plan a lane change earlier than you would on a quiet dual carriageway.

Cyclists and the Highway Code

The 2022 Highway Code revisions set out a hierarchy of road users and expect at least 1.5 metres when overtaking a cyclist at up to 30mph. On the B4113 and around the industrial estates, that clearance often means waiting rather than squeezing past.

What to practise

Two or three sessions specifically on the A444 and the Rye Piece Ringway sequence. Roundabouts in series are the single most common source of avoidable faults in this test area.

Coventry or Warwick: which should you test at?

Test where you have practised. If you are learning in the Warwick, Leamington or Kenilworth area, Warwick is the sensible default and Coventry is the fallback when availability is poor.

Coventry (CV7 9EJ) Warwick (CV34 5AP)
Test types Car, ADI parts 2 and 3 Car, motorcycle mod 2, ADI part 3
Immediate setting Working industrial estate, HGV traffic Quiet industrial road, easy start
Main challenge Roundabouts in sequence, heavy traffic Historic town centre, rural lanes
Higher-speed road A444 Bedworth Bypass A46 Warwick Bypass
Rural lanes Semi-rural connectors only Genuine single-track lanes
Drive With Issy default On request Yes, included in the 30 hour intensive

Test types per the GOV.UK find a driving test centre service. Neither centre is easier in any measurable sense — they test different things.

How should you prepare for a Coventry test?

Get hours on the industrial estate itself, then on the B4113 roundabout sequence, then on the A444. In that order, because the estate is what unsettles people and the roundabouts are what costs them faults.

Weeks three and four out

Bayton Road and Colliery Lane at a working time of day, not a Sunday. The whole point is the commercial traffic. Then the B4113 in both directions.

Week two

The Rye Piece Ringway and Sergeant Simon Valentine Way roundabout sequence, repeatedly, until the lane for the next roundabout is chosen at the exit of the previous one. Add the A444.

Final week

Manoeuvres on the Coalpit Fields Road and Newtown Road residential streets, and bay parking. Then stop adding new material.

Booking

You choose your centre when you book through GOV.UK. Choosing Coventry purely because the date is sooner is how people end up testing on roads they have driven twice. There is more on what the test involves on the practical driving test guide.

If you need those hours condensed, the intensive driving course in Warwick covers the same skills, and driving lessons in Warwick is the starting point for anyone in the wider area. Drive With Issy does not guarantee a pass and will not recommend a test until you are driving at the standard.

Coventry driving test FAQs

Where is Coventry driving test centre?

Bayton Road Industrial Estate, 42 Bayton Road, Coventry, CV7 9EJ, on the Exhall and Bedworth border rather than in Coventry city centre. GOV.UK lists it as running car, ADI part 2 and ADI part 3 tests.

Is Coventry test centre actually in Coventry?

Not in the city centre. The CV7 postcode puts it on the Exhall side, close to Bedworth, so the test area is north Coventry and Bedworth rather than the city ring road.

Which roads is a Coventry test likely to use?

The B4113 corridor — Coventry Road, Leicester Road, Sergeant Simon Valentine Way, Black Bank and Rye Piece Ringway — plus Bayton Road and Colliery Lane on the industrial estate, Bulkington Road on the B4029, and the A444 Bedworth Bypass for higher-speed work.

What makes Coventry different from Warwick?

Traffic type. Bayton Road is a working industrial estate, so you are sharing narrow roads with HGVs and delivery vehicles from the moment you leave. Warwick trades that for a historic town centre and rural lanes.

Will there be dual carriageway driving?

Very likely. The A444 Bedworth Bypass is a trunk road immediately west of the test area, and a test has to assess higher-speed road use.

Are official Coventry test routes published?

No. DVSA withdrew published test routes in 2010. This page describes the road network in the test area, which is what you can actually prepare on.

Does Drive With Issy teach in the Coventry test area?
