There is no set number of driving lessons you need before your practical test. The law does not require a minimum number of lessons or hours, so how many you need depends on you: your starting point, how often you drive, how confident you feel and how quickly you become safe and independent on the road. At Drive With Issy in Leamington Spa and Warwick, you are recommended for your test when you are ready, not when you reach a particular number.
It is the question nearly every learner asks on their first lesson, and it is a fair one. Lessons cost time and money, and you want to plan. This guide explains what actually decides how many lessons you will need, how automatic lessons, intensive courses and nervous-driver lessons change the picture, how readiness for the test is judged, and how to book your first lesson with Issy.
Is there a minimum number of driving lessons?
No. GOV.UK states plainly that there is no minimum number of lessons you must have or hours you must practise driving before you take your test. You can read this for yourself in the “Taking driving lessons” section of the GOV.UK guide to driving lessons and learning to drive.
That freedom cuts both ways. Nobody can tell you that you will be done after a fixed number of lessons, and you should be wary of anyone who promises that. What an instructor can do is watch how you drive, tell you honestly where you are, and give you a realistic idea of what is left to learn as you go.
What decides how many lessons you will need?
Every learner is different. Some people pick driving up quickly; others need more time, and both are completely normal. These are the main things that affect it:
- Your starting point. A complete beginner who has never sat behind the wheel starts in a different place from someone returning after a long break or someone who already drives on an international or European licence.
- How often you have lessons. Regular lessons help skills stick. Long gaps between lessons usually mean spending time recapping before you can move on.
- Private practice. Supervised practice with a suitable accompanying driver, alongside your lessons, helps reinforce what you learn with your instructor. It is not essential, but more varied experience on the road helps.
- Confidence and nerves. Anxiety can make each lesson feel harder. Building confidence properly takes patience, and rushing it rarely saves time in the end.
- Your individual weak points. Most learners find certain skills harder than others, whether that is roundabouts, junctions, manoeuvres or judging hazards. Time spent on the areas you find difficult is time well spent.
- Theory and Highway Code knowledge. Knowing the rules of the road makes practical lessons go further, because you are not learning the rules and the driving at the same time.
At Drive With Issy, your first lesson includes an assessment of your current level and any previous experience. From there, Issy sets a personalised starting point and builds your lessons around your own weak points rather than a fixed syllabus. You can follow your progress, book appointments and use learning resources through the learner app.
Do automatic driving lessons mean fewer lessons?
Not automatically. All tuition at Drive With Issy is in a fully electric automatic Hyundai Kona, and many learners find that not having to manage a clutch or change gear lets them concentrate on the road around them. That can make learning feel less stressful, particularly for nervous learners and adults learning later in life.
But an automatic car does not remove the need to learn observation, judgement, positioning, hazard awareness and independent driving. Those skills are what the practical test is really looking for, and they take the same care to develop in an automatic as in a manual. It is not true that every automatic learner needs fewer lessons. Some find it helps them progress, others still need time on particular skills, and that is fine. You can find out more on our automatic driving lessons page.
Does an intensive driving course get you there faster?
An intensive course can help you progress quickly, because lessons are closer together and you lose less time recapping. Booking lessons in larger blocks lets you move through the key driving skills at pace, without cutting corners.
What an intensive course at Drive With Issy is not is a crash course. Issy will never recommend you for your practical test before he is sure you are ready, however fast you want to go. No course can guarantee a pass, because the result comes down to how you drive on the day of your test. It is also worth remembering that test slots can be booked up well in advance, so even a fast learner may need to plan ahead. Read more about how this works on the intensive driving course page.
What if I am a nervous driver?
If you are anxious about driving, the most important thing is that you are not rushed. Nervous driver lessons with Issy are calm, patient and gradual, and they are built around your confidence as much as your skills. Lessons focus on helping you feel comfortable behind the wheel first, then building up to busier roads and more complex situations as you are ready.
Patience is the theme that runs through Issy’s Google reviews. As one learner, Adina Joita, put it: “Issy is a great instructor. He explained everything very patiently and learning with him was very easy.” Find out more on our nervous driver lessons page.
Returning drivers and international licence holders
If you have driven before, you will not be treated like a complete beginner. Refresher lessons are tailored to what you need, whether that is rebuilding confidence after a break or getting used to UK roads, rules, motorways and test expectations if you have held an international or European licence. Because you already have some skills, the focus is on the areas that matter for you.
How is readiness for the test judged?
Readiness, not a fixed number of hours, decides when you take your test. Issy will recommend you for your practical test when you are driving consistently, safely and independently, without needing constant prompting. In practice that means you can:
- Handle junctions, roundabouts and changing road conditions safely on your own.
- Carry out manoeuvres with good control and observation.
- Spot hazards early and respond to them calmly.
- Drive independently, following directions or road signs, without your instructor talking you through each decision.
- Keep that standard up across lessons, not just on a good day.
As you get close, structured test preparation helps you get familiar with what to expect on the day, including the Show Me Tell Me vehicle safety questions. After you pass, Pass Plus and refresher lessons are available if you want to keep building your experience.
Common questions about how many lessons you need
Can you tell me exactly how many lessons I will need?
Not before seeing you drive, and nobody honestly can. After your first lesson and assessment, Issy can give you a clearer idea of where you are and what to work on, and as your lessons progress you will be able to see how close you are getting through the learner app.
Will I be rushed into taking my test?
No. Drive With Issy will not promise you a pass and will not recommend you for your test until you are genuinely ready. The aim is to make you a safe and responsible driver for life, not to rush you through.
Do private practice sessions help?
They can. Practising with a suitable accompanying driver between lessons reinforces what you learn and gives you more experience of different roads and conditions. Our FAQs explain what you need to practise legally with a friend or family member.
How much will my lessons cost?
Current lesson and package prices are on our price list. Booking lessons in blocks is one way to keep your progress steady.
I am a complete beginner. Where do I start?
You will need a provisional licence before your first lesson. Our learn to drive page sets out the steps, and Highway Code and road-safety tuition can be part of your lessons too.
Is Drive With Issy Motability approved?
Yes. Drive With Issy is Motability approved, so Motability-supported tuition is available. Get in touch to talk through what you need.
