Driving-test preparation from Drive With Issy is one-to-one automatic tuition that gets you ready for the DVSA practical test, in a fully electric Hyundai Kona, with pick-up from home, school or work across Warwick, Leamington Spa and the surrounding Warwickshire area. Issy, a fully qualified DSA-approved instructor, recommends you for your test only when you are ready.

This page explains how test preparation works, what it covers, how pricing works and which areas it is offered in. To check whether your postcode is covered or to ask a question, send Issy a message through the contact form or call +44 7812 390153.

What is driving-test preparation and who is it for?

Driving-test preparation is structured tuition for learners who are close to test standard and want to turn safe everyday driving into consistent, independent driving that meets the standard of the practical test. Readiness, not a fixed number of hours, decides when you take your test.

It is commonly booked by:

All tuition is automatic, so if you pass your test in the Hyundai Kona you will hold an automatic licence.

How does driving-test preparation work, step by step?

You check availability, book a first lesson that assesses your current level, then take personalised one-to-one lessons on your weak points, tracking your progress until you are ready for test day. The eight steps are:

  1. Check availability. Enter your postcode on the website or call +44 7812 390153 to confirm you are within the covered area.
  2. Book your first lesson. Book online or by phone. Evening and weekend slots are available.
  3. Agree a pick-up point. You are collected from a suitable location such as home, school or work. Drive With Issy is a mobile driving school, so you never need to travel to the business address.
  4. First lesson and assessment. Issy assesses your current level and any previous experience and sets a personalised starting point.
  5. Personalised lessons on your weak points. One-to-one tuition covering control, observation, junctions, roundabouts, manoeuvres, hazard awareness and independent driving, built around the areas you need most.
  6. Track your progress. The learner app lets you view your progress, book appointments and use learning resources, alongside Highway Code and road-safety material.
  7. Private practice where possible. Supervised practice with an appropriate accompanying driver reinforces your professional lessons.
  8. Test readiness. You are recommended for the practical test only when you are driving consistently, safely and independently without constant prompting.

What is included in driving-test preparation?

Every test-preparation lesson is one-to-one with Issy in the same fully electric automatic Hyundai Kona, kept clean and maintained. The table below sets out what is and is not part of the service.

Included Not included
Pick-up from home, school or work within the covered area Manual tuition: all lessons are automatic
An assessment of your current level on your first lesson A crash course: the intensive course is not run as one
Lessons focused on your individual weak points rather than a fixed syllabus A fixed number of hours that everyone needs
Practice of junctions, roundabouts, manoeuvres, hazard awareness and independent driving Booking your test for you before you are ready
Show Me Tell Me vehicle safety questions Legal or medical advice on licence eligibility
Access to the learner app for progress, bookings and learning resources

During the practical test, the examiner asks you two “show me, tell me” vehicle safety questions. You can read the questions on the Show Me Tell Me guide, and the practical driving test guide explains how the test is booked.

How much does driving-test preparation cost?

The current rates are on the Drive With Issy price list, which lists single lessons, lesson blocks, a test day fee for taking your practical test in the tuition car, and an intensive course that includes the practical test at Warwick Wedgnock House.

The number of lessons you need depends on your starting point, so the total cost differs from learner to learner. If you want a view on how many lessons you are likely to need before you book a test, call +44 7812 390153 after your first assessment lesson.

How many lessons will I need before my driving test?

There is no fixed or mandatory minimum number of lessons. DVSA guidance points to around 45 hours of professional tuition plus roughly 20 hours of private practice as a general benchmark, but readiness, not hours, decides when you take your test. Some learners need more preparation than others, and Issy will tell you honestly where you are.

Moving to automatic removes clutch control and gear changes, but it does not remove the need to develop observation, judgement, positioning, hazard awareness and independent driving, so automatic learners still need proper preparation. For more detail, read how many driving lessons you will need before your test.

Which test centre will I use near Warwick and Leamington Spa?

Three centres cover most of Warwickshire for car tests: Warwick (Wedgnock House) at Ground Floor, Wedgnock House, Wedgnock Lane, Warwick CV34 5AP, Coventry and Nuneaton, with Rugby covering the east of the county. The intensive course includes the practical test at Warwick Wedgnock House. You can compare centres on the Warwickshire driving test centres page and study the local roads on the Warwick driving test routes page.

Driving-test preparation: common questions

Do you guarantee a pass?

No. No pass is guaranteed with Drive With Issy. The goal is safe, independent driving, and you will only be recommended for your practical test when you are genuinely ready.

How will I know when I am ready for my practical test?

You are ready when you drive consistently, safely and independently without constant prompting. You can see your progress in the learner app, and Issy will tell you honestly where you are.

Can I do test preparation as an intensive course?

Yes. The intensive driving course is not a crash course, and the same rule applies: you will not be recommended for the test before you are ready.

I already drive on an international licence. Will I be treated like a beginner?

No. Test preparation for international and European licence holders focuses on UK roads, rules and test expectations. Refresher lessons are also available if you want to build up familiarity with UK driving first.

Yes. Lessons are patient, gradual and built around your confidence. One learner wrote in a Google review: “Issy is a great instructor. He explained everything very patiently and learning with him was very easy.” (Adina Joita)

Can I take my test in your car?

Yes. The price list includes a test day fee for using the tuition car. If you take the test in a Drive With Issy car, the instructor will drive you home afterwards.

What happens after I pass?

Pass Plus and refresher lessons are available once you have your full licence.
