Kenilworth · Nervous drivers
Nervous driver lessons in Kenilworth are one-to-one automatic lessons paced around anxiety rather than a syllabus. Sessions start on quiet roads off Windy Arbour or Forrest Road, build towards Abbey End and the A452, and cost £75 for 1.5 hours with pick-up from home, school or work included.
Taught by Issy, a fully qualified DSA-approved instructor. Teaching since 2021, 500+ learners taught, 5-star Google rated and Motability approved. Part of the wider driving lessons in Kenilworth coverage.
Send your postcode and tell Issy what worries you. No pressure to book anything.

Lesson one is agreed before the car moves. You are picked up from your own address, the route is described to you in advance, and nothing on it is a surprise. If the first ten minutes are spent stationary getting the seat, mirrors and controls right, that is a normal first lesson here.
Most people arriving at this page fall into one of four groups: learners who have never driven and find the idea frightening, learners who stalled badly or were shouted at with a previous instructor, licence holders who have not driven for years, and drivers who have had a collision and cannot face the road again. The starting point is different in each case, so the first lesson is a conversation as much as a drive.
Kenilworth is a genuinely good town to rebuild confidence in. The residential grid around Windy Arbour, Forrest Road, Park Road and Albion Street is quiet, wide enough to be forgiving, and close enough to home that the first sessions never feel like an expedition. When you are ready, Abbey End and Smalley Place add real traffic without a fast road in sight, and the A452 towards Warwick comes later rather than first.
The car is a fully electric automatic with dual controls. No clutch and no gear changes removes stalling, which is the single most common trigger people describe. It also means the instructor can stop the car at any point, which a lot of anxious learners find reassuring in itself. There is more on the general approach on the our nervous driver lessons page.
The same rates as any other lesson — £75 for 1.5 hours and £90 for 2 hours — with no surcharge for the slower pace and no separate pick-up charge anywhere in Kenilworth. Blocks bring the hourly rate down if you would rather commit in stages.
| Lesson | Price | Typically used for |
|---|---|---|
| 1.5 hour lesson | £75 | The usual length. Long enough to make progress, short enough not to exhaust you |
| 2 hour lesson | £90 | Once confidence is established and you want longer routes |
| 6 hour block | £270 | A first commitment without booking a whole course |
| 10 hour block | £450 | The usual step once you are driving comfortably |
Source: the published Drive With Issy price list. A lesson that ends early because you have had enough is not charged differently, and there is no minimum block to start.
Confidence is built by making each road slightly harder than the last, never by jumping. This is the order Kenilworth learners usually work through, and you stay on a step for as long as you need to.
Windy Arbour, Forrest Road, Park Road and Albion Street. Moving off, stopping, steering, and getting used to a car that creeps forward on its own.
Glasshouse Lane, Clinton Lane and Borrowell Lane. Parked cars on both sides, oncoming traffic, and the first real meet-and-pass decisions.
Abbey End and Smalley Place on the B4103. A one-way section with constant pedestrians and a lot of decisions in a short distance — and the closest thing in Kenilworth to a Warwick test route.
Warwick Road and Bridge Street on the A452, then Coventry Road and New Street on the A429. Steady traffic, higher limits, junctions that arrive quickly.
Leamington Road and Rosemary Hill. Gradient, a bend and a speed limit change close together, so hill starts get planned rather than panicked through.
Rouncil Lane and Birches Lane for single-track and limited visibility, then the Warwick test routes out of Wedgnock Lane once, and only once, you are comfortable.
Pick-up is included anywhere in Kenilworth, including Castle Road, Mill End, Tainters Hill and the newer housing out towards Birches Lane. Send your postcode and you will get a straight yes or no.
The syllabus is identical. What differs is the pace, who sets it, and where the first hour is spent. If inexperience is your only obstacle, standard beginner lessons are cheaper in hours. If nerves are the obstacle, starting in the wrong place tends to cost more in the end.
| Nervous driver lessons | Standard beginner lessons | |
|---|---|---|
| Who sets the pace | You, lesson by lesson | The syllabus |
| Where lesson one happens | Quiet streets off Windy Arbour or Forrest Road, sometimes stationary for the first ten minutes | Quiet streets, moving off within the first lesson |
| Repeating a session | Expected, and not treated as a setback | Occasional |
| Typical starting point | Stalled badly before, shouted at, had a crash, failed a test, or years off the road | Never driven, no particular anxiety |
| Car | Fully electric automatic, dual controls | Fully electric automatic, dual controls |
| Price per 1.5 hours | £75 | £75 |
Not sure which describes you? Say so in the enquiry and Issy will tell you honestly — plenty of people who book nervous driver lessons turn out to just need a patient instructor, and plenty who book standard lessons turn out to need this.
Test-day anxiety is a separate problem from driving anxiety, and it responds well to knowing exactly what is going to happen. Kenilworth learners test at Warwick, at Wedgnock House, Wedgnock Lane, CV34 5AP — about 15 minutes down the A452.
GOV.UK sets out the shape of it plainly. You drive for around 35 minutes. There is an eyesight check, the show me tell me vehicle safety questions, general driving ability, a reversing manoeuvre, and 20 to 35 minutes of independent driving following either a sat nav or road signs. That is the whole thing.
The part most nervous candidates do not know: GOV.UK confirms the examiner will ask whether you want someone to sit in the back of the car during the test, and that person is usually your driving instructor. They cannot take any part in it, but the option exists and it is worth deciding in advance rather than on the morning.
Before a test date is booked, the roads out of Wedgnock Lane get covered properly — Birmingham Road, the A425 through Saltisford, Northgate and The Butts, and the A46 bypass at Stanks Island. There is a road-by-road breakdown on the Warwick driving test routes page and a parking and arrival guide at directions to Warwick test centre.
If anxiety is affecting more than your driving, the NHS publishes self-help guidance on anxiety, fear and panic, and adults aged 18 and over can refer themselves to NHS talking therapies without going through a GP. That is worth knowing independently of any driving lesson.

Never driven, and no particular anxiety about it. Lesson one is quiet roads and the cockpit drill.
You hold a licence but have not driven for a while and want the rust off rather than a rebuild.
30 hours including the practical test. Rarely the right call if nerves are the issue, but the option is there.

A published review describes Issy’s support for an older learner taking automatic lessons for the first time, and highlights his calm and reassuring approach.
On a quiet residential street in Kenilworth, usually off Windy Arbour, Forrest Road or Park Road, and often with the car stationary for the first ten minutes while you get the seat, mirrors and controls set up. Nothing happens until you say you are ready.
The syllabus is the same, but the pace is set by how you feel rather than by a lesson plan. A session can be repeated as many times as it takes, and the route is agreed with you before the car moves rather than sprung on you.
For most anxious learners, yes. Removing clutch control and gear changing removes the two things that cause stalling, and stalling in traffic is the single most common trigger people describe. The trade-off is an automatic-only licence.
Yes. GOV.UK confirms the examiner will ask whether you want someone to sit in the back of the car during the test, and that this is usually your driving instructor. They cannot take any part in the test, but for a lot of nervous candidates their presence helps.
You drive for around 35 minutes, and 20 to 35 minutes of that is independent driving, following either directions from a sat nav or road signs. Knowing the shape of the test in advance takes a surprising amount of the fear out of it.
Warwick, at Wedgnock House, Wedgnock Lane, CV34 5AP. It is the nearest car test centre to Kenilworth, roughly 15 minutes down the A452, and the routes out of it get covered properly long before a test date is booked.
We pull over safely and stop. There is no judgement and no charge for a lesson that ends early. If anxiety is affecting more than your driving, the NHS has self-help guidance and you can self-refer to NHS talking therapies from age 18 without seeing a GP first.
No. Drive With Issy does not offer a guaranteed pass and says so plainly on its intensive course page. A test is recommended when you are driving at the standard, not to a fixed timetable.
Send your postcode, roughly when you can drive, and one line about what worries you most. You will get an honest answer on availability and a plan for a first lesson that does not throw you in at the deep end. That first conversation costs nothing.
